CHOOSING A CAREER AS A PSYCHOLOGIST OR PSYCHIATRIST
Do psychiatrists and psychologists have the same role, and whom should one see for mental health issues?
No. There is a difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist.
Psychiatrist:
- A medical doctor with an MBBS and MD degree.
- Specially trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders.
- Uses medications, therapy, and other treatments to address mental health issues.
Psychologist:
- Holds a master's degree in psychology (MA or MSc).
- Focuses on understanding human behavior, thoughts, and emotions.
- Treats mental health issues primarily through psychotherapy (talk therapy).
The main differences are:
- Educational Qualification: Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MBBS+MD), while psychologists hold a master's degree in psychology.
- Treatment: Psychiatrists can prescribe medications and provide a range of treatments, whereas psychologists primarily focus on psychotherapy and cannot prescribe medications.
When to Approach:
- If you suspect you have mental health issues, consult a psychiatrist first. They can diagnose and treat your condition.
- If you are interested in psychotherapy, consult a psychologist. They can help you understand and change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
